Kris’s Cold Weather Checklist: 5 Things to Check Before the Next Cold Snap

It is January in Franklin, and winter is not done with us yet. Our technician Kris has already jumped three cars this week.

“A battery that tested fine in October does not have the same power when it drops below freezing,” Kris explains. “Cold weather can cut your battery’s capacity in half.”

Here are five things Kris recommends checking this week:

  1. Battery Health — If yours is more than three years old, get it tested. Warning signs include slow cranks and dim dashboard lights.
  • Tire Pressure — Every 10-degree drop costs about 1 PSI. Check pressure when tires are cold. The correct number is on your door sticker.
  • Coolant Levels — Antifreeze prevents freezing in winter. If it is too diluted, it can freeze and crack your engine block.
  • Belts and Hoses — Cold makes rubber brittle. That serpentine belt runs your power steering, alternator, and water pump.
  • Heater and Defroster — If your windshield fogs up and will not clear, you have a safety issue.

Whether you are heading to Trivia Tuesday tomorrow or just getting the kids to school, take a few minutes to think about your car.

Free battery tests this week. No appointment needed.
